Six months ago I decided to finally get a new laptop. Of course I had to decide between a PC and a Mac. So for a little background I haven't purchased a laptop for myself in about 3 to 4 years. I just haven't had the need for one so I've been using my mobile devices and when necessary I would use my friends and family's computers. As a dedicated Apple Fan my first choice was to go with MacBook Pro but I also wanted to explore the option of going back to PC. So I considered getting a Dell XPS laptop but in the end decided to stay in the Apple ecosystem because all my other devices were Apple and it would be easy for me. Budget and Usage Requirements
So there's a couple things I was considering when purchasing this new laptop.
Specifications of the MacBook Pro
Cons
I'm going is to start with the cons and save the good stuff for the end
So far I've had to buy three dongle's for my MacBook Pro. One USB-C to HDMI and 2 USB-C hubs (one didn't allow me to use multiple ports at once so had to get another one) I ended up spending an extra $150 on dongles. There goes my budget of $1500 I'm now at $1650. I linked the accessories below for you. Last month I ran into a situation where I needed to use an external hard drive, connect to an external display and also charge my MacBook. Obviously this was not possible since I only have 2 ports. I completely understand that I could have spend a little bit more money and got two extra USB-C ports but that would've gone over my budget of $1500. I didn't think I would need more than two of them...my bad.
Anyways, I had to go buy a magnetic USB-C cable to solve my clumsiness issue. Another $30 accessory. TOTAL: $1680 =D
You can get by with some light Youtube video editing on this laptop but I wouldn't recommend it for more than that. If you are considering doing any type of video editing you may want to consider a higher-end MacBook Pro or if you're limited by a budget consider a PC. If you're not gonna be doing heavy duty video editing this laptop is more than enough for you. This should also be sufficient for moderate level of Photoshop and Lightroom work.
Maybe my hands are too big and the trackpad is actually the right size. Pros
Now that I'm done complaining let's move on and look at what I like about this MacBook Pro. As usual Apple has designed an absolutely beautiful laptop. These are the main things that stuck out to me and really pushed me towards the MacBook Pro versus any of the other competitors out there.
Should you buy the MacBook Pro?
It depends. If you're going to use this as a daily/travel laptop, aren't doing heavy editing and don't need a bunch of accessories this is the perfect for you. It's a great option for people who have a limited budget and want to get an Apple laptop. There are some cheaper Apple options but I think this is the best value.
Unfortunately, for me this was not the right purchase and I should've gone with the Dell XPS simply because I end up having to carry a lot of accessories everywhere I go and its getting frustrating. It kind of defeats the purpose of a portable laptop. I hate that this MacBook Pro doesn't work for me but hey it is what it is. I can't wait to spend more money with them next year -_- Products in this article
